Our Life Story

Life Community Church started on June 9, 2013 as a small group of people hungry for authentic relationships in a non-hyped, natural and reality based community that value the Bible, worship, family and caring for others out of love. We desire open and honest relationships with God, with our family, friends and others as well as with ourselves. We want people of all ages and from all kinds of backgrounds and experiences to feel at home in our community as we all attempt to follow Jesus wherever he leads us, both as individuals and as a community.

We are a local church body in the Mahomet, Illinois community with members from the surrounding cities of Champaign/Urbana and the outlying areas. We consider ourselves an accidental church plant, in the sense that God surprised us in the midst of seeking Him for direction. Here is how it happened:
Our little group desired to have two bible studies in the local area in the summer of 2013 and as we told others about it, we realized that we did not have a big enough facility to host all the people who told us they were attending. We searched the Mahomet area for a place through local schools, churches and the library. All were helpful and open but the facilities could not accommodate our needs so a small group of us got together on a Friday night to pray and have dinner together. After some sharing and praying, the group spontaneously asked God for three specific things: a facility that was big enough for the two bible studies but that would not cost any money, enough chairs for the group and enough large, round tables for the group to use. Several of us laughed at the specific large, round table prayer. We would be happy with rectangular or oval or square!

Two days later, we saw a place that had a ‘for lease’ sign but the facility was filled with materials that had been stored there for several years. It did not look like a very promising option but we found the owner and asked about the space. If we were willing to help haul away, clean and prepare the place for the owner to try to lease in the fall, our group could have it free of charge for three months. We agreed and got to work hauling away and cleaning up the facility. In the back of the space, behind old furniture and construction supplies we found over 200 chairs. God had answered two of our three prayers. As a group removed a large pile of discarded boxes and trash, we saw twelve large, round tables! Three specific prayer requests and three answers from our loving Father in heaven.
As we prepared the facility for the two bible studies, a few of us who had recently decided to start looking for a new church in the local area asked where we should go for church. We then realized that we had a facility with a bible teacher, several worship leaders and a group of people looking for a place to gather. We decided to meet on Sunday, June 9, to worship, and have a small service with just a few families and friends and then see what God was going to do with the two bible studies over the summer. Word got around that we were going to meet, and on that Sunday morning over sixty people came to the service. We still had only cleared out about half of the stored materials but we had church.

As they say, the rest is history. We now meet every Sunday at 10:00 a.m. and over 150 people consider Life Community Church their local church home. We had our first baptisms, our first wedding, our first outreach to the poor and we now have several small groups, a new mom group, a ministry to the homeless, a Kids’ Life and Youth Life group and we expanded into a new children space and at the end of this month we will be expanding into another space for our teens.

As of June 2013, we hadn’t planned or prepared to start a new church community in the city of Mahomet, but obviously God had other plans. Now we are trying to simply keep up with all He’s doing. We are thankful for God’s provision and for the amazing people who have partnered with us up to this point.
